U.S. Embassies Permitted to Raise Rainbow Flags

American embassies and consulates around the world are now authorized to fly the rainbow flag on the same pole as the U.S. flag, according to reports.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has authorized U.S. diplomatic missions across the world to fly the rainbow rainbow flag on the same pole as the American flag at embassies and consulates, according to a State Department cable reviewed by The New York Times.

Blinken gave US diplomatic outposts the greenlight to fly the rainbow flag before May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, and to keep it on display through Pride Month in June. But the top US diplomat in the cable also said that this was not mandatory, leaving it up to diplomats to “determine that such a display is appropriate in light of local conditions,” per the New York Times, which also reviewed the cable.
