Park Sung-hoon Cast as Trans Woman in Squid Game Season 2
Representation and Controversy: Park Sung-hoon’s Role as a Trans Woman in Squid Game Season 2
The upcoming second season of Squid Game, Netflix’s global phenomenon, has already ignited discussions about representation following the announcement that Korean actor Park Sung-hoon will portray a transgender woman in the series. Park, recognized for his roles in Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum and The Glory, is stepping into the role of Hyun-ju, a former special forces soldier who joins the game to fund her gender-affirming surgery.
Hyun-ju: A Bold New Character
In an interview via Netflix’s Tudum, Park shared insights about his character:
“Hyun-ju is a former special forces soldier and a transgender woman. She joins the game because she’s short on money for her gender-affirming surgery. Even though she faces prejudice and tough situations, she shows incredible strength, decisiveness, and natural leadership. Through her resilience, she breaks down stereotypes and shines as an inspiring character.”
While the introduction of a transgender character has been praised by some fans for pushing boundaries in storytelling, criticism has emerged over the casting choice. Many have questioned why a cisgender actor was chosen to portray a trans woman, arguing that the opportunity should have gone to a trans actress.
